This month we sat down with Pete, Founder of Nemorin Creative, a branded video production company that has been part of the Loft community for a year.

What attracted you to become an entrepreneur?

I wouldn’t actually describe myself as an entrepreneur, merely someone that wants to take control of my own life! I didn’t want to get old and think ‘what if’. You have to try these things, life is too short isn’t it? Sometimes you have to go with your gut instinct and mine said be your own boss. My parents ran their own business, perhaps that rubbed off.

How did the idea of Nemorin Creative came about?

The growth of online video is extraordinary. According to Cisco, by 2019 80% of internet traffic will be video content. Good video content is becoming more and more nuanced and branded video content is leading the way. Branded video is essentially an advert for a brand, BUT it is also useful to the audience. By useful I mean funny, inspiring, informative, surprising or emotional. It engages head and heart as we used to say at The Telegraph [Pete used to be head of Commercial Video for The Telegraph Media Group]. Good branded video is a deal with the audience. Get the content right, make the labeling clear and good content will outway any logo’s or product placement within the content itself. My team at The Telegraph were the first to establish the format of branded video content and now my own business, nemorin.com are the UK’s experts in this area. You’ve developed branded video for many years. Can you give us some of the most important rule of video making?

 

Here are some golden rules:

- Make the video useful to the audience and label it clearly as an ad. No creeping feeling of ‘oh, this is an advert’ halfway through. Branded content is NOT advertorial.

- Don’t try and make a ‘viral video’. By nature, that happens naturally with good, original content. Although, you can pay for distribution now.

- Don’t try and do comedy unless you’re very, very good! A bad video is totally counter productive.

 

What were the biggest struggles in your startup/entrepreneur journey?

Cash flow, paperwork, marketing and people! Hire good people like Thomas, Juan, Theo and the 250 filmmakers on our books at Nemorin.com.

Do you have any advice for the other entrepreneurs to be?

Be nice to people! Be stubborn and don’t take no for an answer. Be blinkered too as people WILL try to bring you down. Stay positive people! Set goals too.
